Purpose:

To give the student training in making acoustical measurements, and provide a

comprehension of advanced measurement systems.

Contents:

Use and calibration of: microphones, accelerometers, probe microphones and intensity

probes. Calibrators, pistonphones, electrostatic actuators.

Measurement methods and equipment: Sine sweep and octave band analysis, MLS, TDS,

and FFT. Stimuli types (sine, swept sine, white/pink noise, impulses, and pseudo

random sequences). Digital interfaces for measurement equipment (IEEE-488/GPIB).

Measurement of (e.g.): SPL, amplitude and phase response, impulse response, and

sensitivity. Impedance measurements. Intensity, sound power.

Evaluation of measurement errors: signal-to-noise ratio, crosstalk, windowing, time

averaging, linear/exponential weighting, physical set-ups.

Prerequisites:

Fundamentals of acoustics, Acoustical Transducers.
