Purpose:
To give the student a thorough comprehension of how
sound waves arise and
propagate.
Contents:
The wave equation and fundamental wave-theoretical
terms, definitions of pressure,
intensity, impedance, standard units, decibel scales.
Simple fields: plane waves, spherical waves,
cylindrical waves, free fields, and diffuse
fields. Absorption, reflection, refraction,
diffraction, transmission with loss.
Description of sources: point source, spherical
source, line source, monopole, dipole,
piston, sound source array, directivity, radiation
impedance.
Sound in simple enclosures: ducts, pipes, tubes,
guided waves, resonators, acoustical
filters, mufflers, ventilation systems. Electrical
analogues.
Introduction to: infrasound, ultrasound, and underwater
acoustics.
Prerequisites:
Basic skills in physics and mathematics. Partial
differential equations, complex
arithmetic.
